I'm Free!!
Sadly, John Inman, Mr. Humphries in the 1970's British comedy "Are You Being Served", is now free for good.
sorry to hear. is hard to believe now, but the shrill, mincing, given-to-the-double-entendre Mr. Humphries was a groundbreaking character. remember, this was in the 70's, when homosexuality in Britain had just become decriminalized (1967), and the door to the closet was firmly shut.

I am a big fan of Are You Being Served. We still get it on PBS, late at night. Mr. Humphries was certainly my favorite.
Theme song:
Ground floor perfumery,
stationery and leather goods,
wigs and haberdashery
kitchenware and food...going up
First floor telephones,
gents ready-made suits,
shirts, socks, ties, hats,
underwear and shoes...going up
Second floor carpets,
travel goods and bedding,
material, soft furnishings,
restaurant and teas. Going down!
You are thinking of Keeping up appearances with Hyacinth Bouquet (Bucket).
I'm freeeeee!
The show hasn't been on TV in Denver for a few years, but I've seen the episodes so many times that I could probably quote them. And Mr. Humphreys was one of my favorite characters.
When I saw the article this morning, I wondered how much they all kept in touch, and it looks like at least Wendy Richard (Miss Brahms) was close enough to be one of the first ones they called.
The first AYBS? episode I ever saw was the one where they were doing the fashion show as part of Mr. Rumbold's "brilliant" advertising campaign. I was a little shocked at all the innuendo. :)
I don't think KUA is on here at the moment, either, but they have been showing "Last of the Summer Wine," which featured Frank Thornton, another AYBS? alumni (Captain Peacock).
I havent' seen much of LotSW; I didnt' realized Capt. Peacock is in it. I do know that whoever does the voice for Wallace in Wallace & Gromit is a player in LofSW: I'd recognize that voice anywhere
You are most certainly welcome. I used to watch AYBS with my Auntie C. and she watched it so often she all of the words, after YEARS of watching I suppose. I was always so impressed when the theme would come on and she always got all of the words right since I could barely make them out.
I never got into KUA, but are there any CHEF! fans among you?
Yes! Chef! was hilarious!
Along with "Yes, Minister" and "Yes, Prime Minister" and "The Piglet Files" and a bunch of the other older Britcoms. The newer stuff just really isn't that funny. Instead of innuendo, they beat you over the head with the off-color.
we got back early Saturday morning and I'm just now beginning to resemble a human.
I had to work today and went to bed early.
